Your baby is now about the size of a pineapple and settling into their birth position. Lungs are almost fully mature, most babies are head-down by now, and the last major medical checks of pregnancy are on the calendar.
Common symptoms at 34 weeks pregnant
- Increased pressure in the pelvis as baby drops (lightening)

Frequently asked questions
What is Group-B strep?
GBS is a bacterium that lives harmlessly in the gut of about one in four adults. If it is present at birth, IV antibiotics during labour reduce the small risk of transmission to the baby.
How will I know when labour has started?
True labour contractions get stronger, longer, and closer together — and they do not stop with rest or hydration. Water breaking or a bloody show is another sign to call your provider.
Is my baby engaged?
Engagement means the baby’s head has moved into the pelvis. First-time mothers usually engage around 36-38 weeks. Second-time mothers often engage only in labour.
When to call your provider
Most weeks of pregnancy pass without alarm, but a small set of symptoms always deserves urgent attention. Call your doctor or head to the nearest maternity emergency room straight away for any of the following:
- Heavy, bright-red vaginal bleeding or the passage of clots
- Severe headache with visual changes, upper-abdominal pain, or sudden facial swelling
- Any leaking of fluid before 37 weeks or a sudden gush of fluid at any week
- A clear drop in your baby’s usual pattern of kicks, or fewer than 10 movements in two hours during their active window
- Fever above 38 °C, painful urination, or one-sided calf swelling
Where week 34 sits in the third trimester
The third trimester begins at week 28 and ends at birth. Baby gains most of their weight now, senses sharpen, and your body prepares for labour with practice contractions and hormonal shifts. Sleep gets trickier and appointments become weekly by the end. Week 34 is one step closer to meeting your baby.
