At week 10 your baby has completed the most critical phase of organ formation. Reflexes are developing, tiny nails are appearing, and the fetus can now bend elbows and kick minute legs even though you cannot feel it yet.
Common symptoms at 10 weeks pregnant
- Visible veins on the breasts and chest as blood volume rises
- Round-ligament twinges — brief, sharp pulls low on either side of the belly
- Dizziness or lightheadedness on standing quickly
- Vivid, sometimes strange, dreams
- Fatigue that starts to lift for some mothers by the end of the week
Tips for week 10
- Stand up slowly and stay hydrated — most first-trimester dizziness is due to low blood pressure and low blood sugar.
- Book your NT scan and NIPT (if desired) between weeks 11 and 13+6 for the best accuracy.
- Switch to supportive, wire-free bras. Breasts often grow one to two cup sizes during the first trimester.
- Talk to your dentist about a pregnancy-safe cleaning — bleeding gums are common now.
This week's checklist
- Schedule NT scan (11-13+6 weeks)
- Discuss NIPT with your provider
- Photograph the 10-week bump
Frequently asked questions
What is the NT scan and do I need it?
The nuchal-translucency scan measures fluid at the back of the baby’s neck between 11 and 13+6 weeks. Combined with a blood test, it screens for Down syndrome and other chromosomal conditions. It is optional but widely recommended.
Is NIPT better than the NT scan?
NIPT is a maternal-blood DNA test with over 99 percent detection for common chromosomal conditions. Many parents choose to do both — the scan visualises anatomy while NIPT provides genetic reassurance.
When can I hear the heartbeat with a Doppler?
Most home Dopplers cannot reliably find the heartbeat until 12 weeks. Waiting for the clinic scan reduces anxiety when the sound is hard to locate.
When to call your provider
Most weeks of pregnancy pass without alarm, but a small set of symptoms always deserves urgent attention. Call your doctor or head to the nearest maternity emergency room straight away for any of the following:
- Heavy, bright-red vaginal bleeding or the passage of clots
- Severe headache with visual changes, upper-abdominal pain, or sudden facial swelling
- Any leaking of fluid before 37 weeks or a sudden gush of fluid at any week
- Severe one-sided lower-abdominal or shoulder-tip pain (possible ectopic in early pregnancy)
- Fever above 38 °C, painful urination, or one-sided calf swelling
Where week 10 sits in the first trimester
The first trimester runs from week 1 to week 12. It is the busiest time for organ formation and often the most physically demanding — nausea, extreme fatigue, and emotional shifts are common. By the end of trimester one, the miscarriage risk drops sharply and most mothers begin to feel more like themselves. Week 10 lands in this early, tender window.
