Welcome to the second trimester. Energy usually returns this week, appetite normalises, and many mothers describe weeks 14-27 as the honeymoon phase of pregnancy. Your baby is now the size of a lemon and can suck a tiny thumb.
Common symptoms at 14 weeks pregnant
- A noticeable energy rebound
- Nasal congestion or nosebleeds from increased blood flow
- Round-ligament pain when standing up quickly
- A visible bump becoming harder to hide
- Occasional heartburn as the uterus starts to press upward
Tips for week 14
- This is a good week to travel if you have plans — energy is up and the bump is still small.
- Start prenatal yoga or Pilates. Focus on breathwork, hip openers, and gentle core stability.
- Invest in one or two pieces of maternity clothing. A soft belly band can extend your existing wardrobe by weeks.
- Book a dental checkup. Pregnancy gingivitis is common and easy to treat.
This week's checklist
- Book the anomaly scan for 18-22 weeks
- Start prenatal yoga or swimming
- Plan any second-trimester travel
Frequently asked questions
Can I sleep on my back at 14 weeks?
Short periods on your back are still safe. From around 20 weeks, side-sleeping (ideally left) becomes the preferred position because it maximises blood flow to the placenta.
Why am I still tired sometimes?
Your blood volume is up 40 percent, your heart is working harder, and your uterus is doubling in size — some fatigue is expected. Iron-rich foods and a short daytime rest help.
Is it safe to dye my hair now?
Most obstetricians agree that occasional hair colouring after 12 weeks is safe. Choose ammonia-free products and colour in a well-ventilated room.
When to call your provider
Most weeks of pregnancy pass without alarm, but a small set of symptoms always deserves urgent attention. Call your doctor or head to the nearest maternity emergency room straight away for any of the following:
- Heavy, bright-red vaginal bleeding or the passage of clots
- Severe headache with visual changes, upper-abdominal pain, or sudden facial swelling
- Any leaking of fluid before 37 weeks or a sudden gush of fluid at any week
- Severe one-sided lower-abdominal or shoulder-tip pain (possible ectopic in early pregnancy)
- Fever above 38 °C, painful urination, or one-sided calf swelling
Where week 14 sits in the second trimester
The second trimester covers weeks 13 to 27 and is often called the honeymoon of pregnancy. Energy comes back, morning sickness fades, and this is the phase when you feel the first kicks, complete the anatomy scan, and start planning practical things — nursery, maternity clothes, and childbirth classes. Week 14 sits comfortably in this window.
Educational content — not a substitute for medical care. Contact your obstetric provider urgently for heavy bleeding, severe headache with visual changes, one-sided leg swelling, upper-abdominal pain, reduced fetal movement, or any concern that feels wrong to you.
