Nine months is the crawling, cruising, waving month. Baby understands so much more than they can say and is starting to figure out that objects still exist when out of sight. Separation anxiety often makes its first appearance around now.
9 months old developmental milestones
- Crawls, scoots, or shuffles across the room
- Pulls to stand at furniture
- Waves bye-bye and claps hands
- Says a first meaningful "mama" or "dada"
- Understands "no" (even if they don’t obey)
Care tips for 9 months old
- Baby-proof the entire ground floor: cover sockets, lock cupboards, secure heavy furniture to the wall.
- Lower the cot mattress to the lowest setting — pull-to-stand means dive risk.
- Offer soft finger foods so baby can practise the pincer grasp. Small pieces of banana, well-cooked pasta, and grated cheese work well.
- Play repetition-and-reveal games — hide a toy under a cloth and let baby lift the cloth.
This month's checklist
- Baby-proof the whole house
- Attend the 9-month check-up
- Introduce finger foods
Frequently asked questions
Why is my 9-month-old suddenly clingy?
Separation anxiety peaks between 8 and 14 months as baby realises you exist even when out of sight. Short, cheerful goodbyes and a consistent caregiver help.
Is my baby a late crawler?
Some babies skip crawling entirely and go straight to cruising. If baby shows no interest in moving by 12 months, mention it at the well-baby check.
When should I move to a forward-facing car seat?
Rear-facing until at least 15 months (or 2 years where possible). Rear-facing is up to five times safer in a collision.
When to call your paediatrician
Most months of babyhood pass without alarm, but a small set of symptoms always deserves urgent review. Contact your paediatrician or the nearest paediatric emergency room straight away for any of the following:
- Fever above 39 °C, or any fever lasting more than 72 hours
- Refusing more than two feeds in a row, or fewer wet nappies than usual
- Breathing that is fast, noisy, or with visible chest tugging
- Persistent vomiting, blood in stool, or a swollen belly
- Any sudden loss of a skill baby had already learned
Where the 9 months old stage fits in
Between six and twelve months, mobility explodes. Baby transitions from motion controlled by reflexes to intentional rolling, sitting, crawling, and pulling to stand. Solids begin, sleep starts to consolidate, and separation anxiety often appears. Baby-proofing and consistent responses matter more than ever.
Educational content — not a substitute for medical care. Contact your paediatrician urgently for high fever in a young infant, refusing feeds, laboured breathing, persistent vomiting, or any concern that feels wrong to you.
