💡 Tip for parents

Book the 1-year vaccinations and dental check. Whole cow’s milk can now replace formula.

One year old. Your baby has tripled birth weight, is on the verge of walking (or already toddling), and is starting to string sounds into meaningful words. It’s a huge milestone month — and time for a big set of vaccinations.

12 months old (1 year) developmental milestones

  • Pulls to stand and cruises along furniture; some babies take first steps
  • Uses 1-3 meaningful words alongside a lot of babbling
  • Responds to their name and simple commands ("wave bye-bye")
  • Drinks from a cup with help
  • Plays alongside other babies (not yet with them)

Care tips for 12 months old (1 year)

  1. Book the 12-month vaccinations — usually MMR, varicella, hepatitis A booster, and PCV/Hib boosters.
  2. Switch from formula to whole cow’s milk (or fortified plant milk if advised). Breastfeeding can continue as long as you both want.
  3. Say and read the same words on repeat — familiar books unlock a language explosion.
  4. Give safe household objects for pretend play (wooden spoon, plastic bowls). Real objects beat toys.

This month's checklist

  • Attend 1-year vaccinations
  • Book the 1st dental check
  • Switch to whole cow’s milk

Frequently asked questions

What are the developmental milestones at 12 months?

Pulling to stand and cruising, first meaningful words, waving, pointing, drinking from a cup, and playing simple games like peek-a-boo.

When should I worry about not walking?

Average first steps happen between 9 and 15 months. Only be concerned if there’s no cruising by 15 months or no walking by 18 months.

How much milk does a 1-year-old need?

Around 350-500 ml of whole milk a day (roughly two cups). More than 700 ml can crowd out iron-rich solid food.

When to call your paediatrician

Most months of babyhood pass without alarm, but a small set of symptoms always deserves urgent review. Contact your paediatrician or the nearest paediatric emergency room straight away for any of the following:

  • Fever above 39 °C, or any fever lasting more than 72 hours
  • Refusing more than two feeds in a row, or fewer wet nappies than usual
  • Breathing that is fast, noisy, or with visible chest tugging
  • Persistent vomiting, blood in stool, or a swollen belly
  • Any sudden loss of a skill baby had already learned

Where the 12 months old (1 year) stage fits in

Between one and two, walking becomes running, sounds turn into words, and toddlers begin to test the edges of independence. Language, empathy, and imagination all bloom during this year. Predictable routines, generous naming of feelings, and lots of shared reading power the biggest gains.

Educational content — not a substitute for medical care. Contact your paediatrician urgently for high fever in a young infant, refusing feeds, laboured breathing, persistent vomiting, or any concern that feels wrong to you.
